Paving the Way for True Accessibility

In July 2001, the Ability Foundation embarked on a transformative journey, conducting comprehensive access audits throughout Chennai's public spaces. These assessments illuminated the multifaceted nature of accessibility, revealing that it transcends mere wheelchair accommodations. Key elements such as tactile guide rails, Braille signage, appropriate floor materials, and visual aids are essential for fostering an inclusive environment.

The audit team, composed of individuals with diverse disabilities, meticulously examined banks, post offices, and public libraries, ensuring that the perspectives of those directly affected were central to the process. While the findings garnered significant attention and sparked meaningful discussions, they also underscored the reality that we have much work ahead to achieve true, unobstructed accessibility for everyone.
