Integrated Shows

SANGAMAM:
In 1997, we organized an integrated cultural show of classical dance. Called Sangamam (“a coming together”), it saw expert dancers with and without disability came together in a professionally conducted programme with no focus on disabilities. It was a show which proved to be an eye-opener for the entire audience.

SAMARA:
In our next cultural show we took to the ramp. Celebrating the Human Rights Day in 1997, Ability Foundation organised a unique fashion show named Samara (“to meet”) for the first time ever. Beautiful persons with disabilities and celebrities from all walks of life - models, social workers, film stars, professionals, sportspersons and industrialists shared the stage with the former Miss World Aishwarya Rai and noted pop singer Usha Uthup to present an imaginative, enriching and immensely entertaining show that emphasised the universal right to beauty and recreation.

SAMHITA:
An integrated Art Show, Samhita, (“to assemble”) followed in 2000. This mega event brought together many of the best-known names in contemporary Indian art. Arpana Caur, Jatin Das and Nandagopal, to name just a few, exhibited their work along with professional disabled artists. About 60 artists from all over the country came together to display art in its purest form. Apart from being a visual feast, it underlined the message that art transcends all barriers, and can be truly integrative. |
