Census Operations of 2001 was a landmark event for the disability movement in India. For the first time, a comprehensive effort was made to include persons with disabilities. Ability Foundation coordinated a series of sensitisation programmes on disability with the Directorate of Census Operations. The programmes covered all the 150,000 census enumerators in Tamil Nadu, the first state to conduct such a programme. In addition, the Foundation launched a public awareness campaign through posters and stickers. A one-minute film, made by well-known director Sri. Rajiv Menon, was telecast on twenty two channels across the country.
