CavinKare ABILITY Award for Eminence:
Madhukar Vishvanath Shiordhonkar (Indore, Madhya Pradesh) The first qualified physiotherapist in the country, this visually and orthopaedically impaired veteran has inspired several associations and federations to rehabilitate and empower thousands of visually-impaired men and women. Many people today remember him as the main force and inspiration for their formal education and eventual success in life.
CavinKare ABILITY Award for Mastery:
Shivani Gupta (New Delhi)
A familiar figure in disability activism circles, Shivani has allowed neither her quadriplegia nor society’s stereotyped attitudes to prevent her from seeking her rights as an individual. With a Master’s in access designing from the United Kingdom, she lives independently and pursues her dream of an India sans physical barriers. She is the founder of AccessAbility, a disability access and employment consultancy firm.
Jagdeep Singh Dangi (Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh) The adage ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’ assumes special significance when necessity is experienced by a genius like Jagdeep. Not allowing poverty and lack of facilities to deter him, this young entrepreneur with dual disability — orthopaedic and visual, has created a Hindi-English I-Browser with Yahoo/Hotmail software. We know this is just the first step, towards several more.
Veena Mehta Verma (New Delhi) Veena defied stereotypes from day one - studying subjects that are normally denied to the visually-impaired, like Maths, Science, Accounts, Commerce, and Management. Feisty is how one would describe this young woman who fought tooth and nail for her rights to be educated and employed. She is the first blind woman to have been offered a job at her level at NTPC. Prior to that, she was a top performer in an IT multinational. She has also been a mountaineer, paraglider, horse rider, model and rock-climber.
