Access Audit
To promote awareness on the need for an easily accessible environment Ability Foundation conducted a series of Access Audits of various public places in Chennai in July 2001. The audit brought to the fore that access includes, not just provisions for wheelchair users, but also includes features such as usage of guide rails, Braille signage, floor materials and visual inputs. The team consisting of persons with hearing and visual impairment, limited mobility, an architect and a photographer visited commonly used public places like banks, post offices, railway station and public libraries. The Access Audit created an impact, although there is a long way to go before we reach complete accessibility.
